UHCAN Ohio believes that decisions on policy and law should be informed by their impact on public health.
Ohio consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of states in terms of health outcomes. Data shows that health outcomes vary significantly across different communities, often due to income levels, geography, and other social factors. Policy decisions are a major factor in shaping these outcomes.
We work to ensure that hospitals and healthcare systems engage with local communities to improve care and outcomes. Ohio must take deliberate steps to create policies and laws that reduce the state’s poor health rankings. Political, financial, legal, and social institutions all play a role in shaping opportunities for better health. Laws, policies, and investments should be designed to broadly improve public health without creating unintended barriers.
Visible differences in health outcomes are a sign of systemic challenges. These differences are often the result of long-term gaps in access to resources and services. Improving public health requires addressing the root causes—such as poverty, lack of access to education, safe housing, and quality care—that prevent people from achieving good health.
While Ohio faces challenges in many areas, the gaps in health outcomes affect people across many backgrounds and communities. We encourage you to be part of the effort to improve health in Ohio and to share what you’re doing to help.
