Medicaid

UHCAN Ohio is working to preserve Medicaid.  In 2013 and 2014 UHCAN Ohio helped to lead the charge to expand Medicaid. We worked with organizations across the state to urge our state legislators to approve Medicaid expansion in Ohio.  As a result, since January 2014, when Medicaid Expansion was implemented, over 650,000 more Ohioans have enrolled in coverage.

UHCAN Ohio is constantly reviewing and analyzing emerging legislation and educating consumers on the possible impacts.  When appropriate we rally the troops so to speak to action.  Today we are facing another threat to the Medicaid program, the Healthy Ohio 1115 waiver proposal.  This waiver if approved would institute premiums, health savings accounts and terminate people for lack of payment of premiums and could undo the success Ohio has had with increased enrollment through the expansion of Medicaid.  The public comment period for this waiver opened up on April 13, 2016 and closed on May 16, 2016.  The Ohio Department of Medicaid will respond to input provided during the open comment period and submit their final proposal to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicaid Services by the end of June.

Objectives:

  • Educate those who will be impacted by the Healthy Ohio Waiver including consumers, providers and other stakeholders on the waiver.
  • Educate stakeholders and prepare them to weigh in on the Healthy Ohio Waiver.
  • Coordinate a campaign to bring robust, diverse comments on the Healthy Ohio Waiver during the state and federal comment periods

Accomplishments:

  • UHCAN Ohio assisted 119 individuals and 43 organizations provide input during the state comment period on the waiver.
  • Co-hosted an information and advocacy webinar with over 150 attendees
  • Been the source for the consumer perspective by the media; accumulating 10 media mentions on the issue
